Kirkbymoorside is often referred to as The Gateway to the North York Moors National Park, with its name derived historically from Church (Kirk) by the moor side, being an ancient market town situated on a hillside with some lovely Yorkshire properties, much of the town centre falls within the Conservation Area. A regular ancient market takes place in the town every Wednesday. The town centre has a fine array of facilities including shops, post office, hotels, public houses, library, places of worship, such as the Parish Church of All Saints, the Catholic Church of St Chads, Methodist Chapel and Quaker Meeting House. Kirkbymoorside has an outstanding 18 hole course with a fabulous club house. The town has its own football club and leisure facility including, tennis courts, squash courts and bowls club. A very popular recreation facility can be found further afield at the Great Dalby Forest with numerous outdoor activities, including mount biking, walking, GoApe, Segways and rallying.
For those who like to visit country houses, ancient buildings and their grounds then why not make time to visit, Castle Howard, Duncombe Park, Nunnington Hall, Helmsley Castle, Byland Abbey and Rievaulx Abbey.

The area has not been un-noticed by film crews which has very much helped to put this area on the tourist map, with series such as James Herriott, Heartbeat, Brideshead, Harry Potter, Dad’s Army, Indiana Jones and Mission Impossible, many of these incorporate the North York Moors Railway.
Thrill seekers may wish to visit the theme parks of Flamingo Land at Kirby Misperton as well as Lightwater Valley near Ripon and the Alpamare waterpark in Scarborough. Those looking for less energetic options may like to consider the Ryedale Folk Museum in Hutton le Hole, Beck Isle Museum in Pickering, the Malton Museum, as well as the Eden Camp Museum or even take a trip on the North York Moors Railway from Pickering to Whitby. Extremely good theatrical productions are put on at the Kirk Theatre in Pickering, the Helmsely Arts Centre and Milton Rooms Malton. Malton has its very own Palace cinema.
